U.S. Nears 10 Million COVID-19 Cases Amid Surge in Hospitalizations and Deaths
The United States is on the brink of surpassing 10 million COVID-19 cases, with over 9.9 million confirmed infections as of Sunday evening, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Record-Breaking Spike in Daily Cases and Hospitalizations
On Sunday alone, the U.S. reported 100,762 new COVID-19 cases and 453 new deaths, marking the fifth consecutive day of record-breaking daily infections. The fall resurgence has led to rising hospitalizations and fatalities, and health experts warn that the numbers could escalate in the coming weeks.
"We're going to see these case numbers really start to explode," Dr. Scott Gottlieb, former FDA Commissioner, told CNBC. He emphasized that while states could contain the virus with targeted prevention measures, the lack of intervention may lead to even more severe outbreaks in the next two months.
"It's not just the cases; it's the hospitalizations as well," Gottlieb added. "Currently, 53,000 people are hospitalized, with 10,500 in ICUs, and the numbers are growing rapidly."
State-by-State Breakdown of the COVID-19 Surge
- 16 states reported record-high hospitalizations on Friday, per the COVID Tracking Project.
- 22 states have hit at least one record high for hospitalizations in November alone.
- Texas is nearing 1 million confirmed cases, with over 5,000 new infections reported on Sunday.
- Oregon surpassed the "alarming threshold" of 50,000 cases, according to Governor Kate Brown.
Global COVID-19 Cases Surpass 50 Million
As the U.S. grapples with its surge, the global total of COVID-19 cases exceeded 50 million on Sunday. The hardest-hit countries remain:
- United States
- India
- Brazil
- Russia
The Road Ahead: Preventive Measures and Warnings
Health officials continue to urge mask-wearing, social distancing, and widespread testing to curb the spread of the virus. Experts warn that if immediate action isn’t taken, the winter months could bring even higher infection rates, putting further strain on hospitals and healthcare systems nationwide.
